Machinery

Elevator arrangements

Overhead machine

The machine sits in a room above the shaft and raises the car on ropes that run over the motor, balanced by a counterweight. It is a familiar, serviceable arrangement, but it needs a dedicated machine room above the shaft.

Hydraulic machine

A hydraulic ram raises the car using oil pressure from a pump and tank, rather than pulling it from above on ropes. It suits lower rises and a small number of stops, and does not need a machine room at the top of the shaft.

Gearless machine

A gearless motor drives the traction sheave directly, with no gearbox in between, so travel is quieter and levelling more precise. Its compact size lets it sit inside the shaft itself on machine-room-less installations.
